The academic year is coming to an end, and national exams are already in progress for Senior Four (O Level) students. Primary Leaving exams will be held tomorrow and the following day (November 8th and 9th) and then it will be time for a well-earned rest for Primary Seven pupils across the country. Senior Six will soon begin their A Level exams, which end in the first half of December.
Sue (CEO for Hand in Hand, the UK charity with whom we partner) and Peter (Hand in Hand’s East Africa Development Manager, based in Kenya) spent several days in Uganda towards the end of last month, including two days visiting JJ’s primary school, secondary school and college. They were able to see for themselves the progress made since their last visit, to meet new staff members, be entertained by primary pupils and to provide encouragement to pupils, students and staff members.

their teachers, Director and School Management Committee member.
As elsewhere, the costs of fuel and basic food items in Uganda have increased significantly during the past year. Unlike many schools, JJ has not reflected these increased costs by raising the fees charged during the year. This has at least not added to the stress on families’ incomes, but it has significantly added to the stress on JJ’s finances (!), and also on staff members, since we have made minimal salary increments during the year.
In case you would like to support JJ with a monthly contribution towards staff salaries, this can be done through Hand in Hand. Select “JJCT Nshumi Restricted” as the fund.
Other activities this term include sports, chapel time, participation in radio programs, a visit to JJ Excel College by secondary students, and real-life practical projects at the college, as well as lots of revision in preparation for exams!
If you would like to help us continue to provide subsidised education for children and young people who may otherwise drop out of school, please visit Hand in Hand’s website to make a monthly donation or one-off gift (choose “JJCT Nshumi Restricted” or “JJCT (U)” as the fund). And to those who are already doing so, we say a big THANK YOU!
