“Days for Girls” comes to JJ

The monthly menstruation period is a challenging time for many girls in Uganda – some cannot afford to purchase disposal sanitary pads. As a result, many school days are lost annually due to absenteeism during that time. “Days for Girls” (www.daysforgirls.org) have designed re-usable, easy to wash sanitary pads which can last up to 3 years and enable girls continue to attend school during menstruation.

Last week, Ann, a trainer from the organisation came to JJ to teach four of our teachers and a visiting nurse how to make these sanitary pads.  Ann also provided training in topics related to women’s health, in sexual abuse and assault and in self-defence. Our teachers our now planning to pass on what they learnt to the girls studying at JJ – the girls will soon start making their own sanitary pads.

If you would like to donate towards buying fabric for the girls to make these pads please click here to so through Just Giving or here for more options on how to do so through our partner organisation Hand in Hand.  Please state that your donation is for making re-usable sanitary pads.
